Biography
Beginning
at the age of five, Randy's future was already set in stone. While all the
other children his age were out playing baseball, running around and
doing what kids do at that age, Randy was sitting at the piano. At the age
of 12, Randy was hired for his first professional job, demonstrating pianos
at a music store.
While
still in
high school, Randy was already a very busy
musician, playing for shows, backing up singers and various
musical jobs. At
the age of 21, he was hired to go on tour as the pianist for Frank
Sinatra. Shortly thereafter, Randy
was
hired to tour with The Letterman, which brought Randy to the
west coast.
Within
his first year of moving to Los Angeles, Randy continued to work
on live concerts with Sinatra. He was also hired to tour with
various artists, starting with Minnie Ripperton, then Lou Rawls,
Paul Anka,
and
George Benson, the latter of whom hired Randy to be his pianist,
conductor and arranger for the next seven years.
Randy's
reputation quickly spread in the Los Angeles studio scene, and he
started to get more and more calls for recording sessions until
he eventually ended his full-time touring to devote all of
his time
to studio work. What followed
were ten
years of non-stop recording session work on records, movies, TV,
jingles, songwriting and arranging. Some records Randy's talents
can be
heard on are: Celine Dion, Michael Bolton, Madonna, Whitney Houston,
Vanessa Williams, Patti LaBelle, Michael Jackson, and many others.
Motion picture soundtracks that he performed on are: Forrest
Gump, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Hoffa, Back to the Future, The Bodyguard,
Father of the
Bride,
Beetlejuice, to name a few.
During
this period, Randy was nominated for Best
Vocal Arrangement for "Code of Ethics" which he co-wrote
for the Manhattan Transfer.
He also co-arranged (and performed) on the hit song "Somewhere" for
Barbra Streisand, which won a Grammy Award for Best Arrangement.
Randy was voted Most Valuable player during this time and was
nominated Most Valuable Player three other times by the National Academy
of Recording Arts and Sciences.
Lately,
Randy has been wearing the producer hat, having produced Johnny
Mathis, Bobby Caldwell,
Patti LaBelle, Kenny G, The Stylistics, Mary Wilson, and others.
As an orchestra arranger, he has written arrangements
for Beyonce, Barbra Streisand, Ray Charles, James Taylor, Diana Krall,
Johnny Mathis, Bonnie Raitt, Nancy Wilson, Gladys Knight, Kenny G.
and many others.
For
several years, Randy's peers had asked him, "Why haven't
you done your own record"? The more he thought about it, the
more sense it started to make. Randy eventually created The
Randy Waldman Trio and released the albums "Wigged
Out", "Unreel" and "Timing is Everything."
